TL;DR: The lowest carb bread options are keto bread (about 2 g of net carbs a slice in the typical product), low carb tortillas (about 5 g each) and lettuce or mushroom “buns” (under 3 g). Regular white bread has about 16 g a slice, and even whole wheat and sprouted bread have about 12 g. The best low carb bread is one with few net carbs, real fiber, some protein and no added sugar.

What makes a bread low carb?

A low carb bread keeps the digestible carbohydrate low enough to fit a low carb diet (under 130 g of carbs a day) or a keto diet (about 20–50 g a day) (Oh et al., StatPearls, NIH). Most regular bread is about 43–52% carbohydrate by weight in USDA data, so a low carb bread has to change the recipe:

  • Replace most wheat flour with fiber (wheat, oat or flax) and wheat protein.
  • Use nut or seed flours, such as almond or flax.
  • Or skip bread entirely and use a whole-food wrap, such as lettuce or a portobello cap.

To compare options, look at net carbs: total carbohydrate minus fiber, per serving.

Low carb bread options compared

Keto bread, low carb tortillas, portobello caps and lettuce leaves all land at 5 g of net carbs or less per serving. Whole wheat and sprouted bread are better than white, but at about 12 g a slice they are not low carb.

The options, one by one

1. Keto bread (about 2 g net carbs a slice). Made with wheat fiber, wheat protein, seeds or nut flours. Of 16 keto breads in USDA’s branded database, the median slice has 2 g of net carbs and 8 g of fiber; the range is 0–9 g. It is the closest to real bread for sandwiches and toast. 2. Low carb sourdough (a few grams a slice). The same idea with a sourdough flavor and texture. Regular sourdough is not low carb, at about 17 g of net carbs a slice. Read more in low carb sourdough bread.

3. Low carb tortillas and wraps (about 5 g each). Seven low carb tortillas in USDA’s branded database range from 3 to 6 g of net carbs each, with lots of added fiber. A regular flour tortilla has about 22 g.

4. Lettuce wraps (under 1 g). Two outer romaine leaves have about 0.7 g of net carbs. Great for burgers and tacos, but not for toast.

5. Portobello caps (about 2 g). One whole cap has about 2 g of net carbs and works as a burger bun.

6. Cloud bread or egg-based “bread” (0–1 g). Made mostly from eggs and cream cheese. Very low carb and soft, but it does not taste or toast like bread.

7. Sprouted and whole grain bread (about 12 g a slice). Healthier than white bread, with more fiber, but too high in carbs for keto. A fit for a moderate low carb plan in small amounts. See the healthiest bread.

8. White and regular sandwich bread (about 16 g a slice). The one most people are replacing.

How to pick the best low carb bread

  1. Net carbs per serving: 5 g or less for keto; under 10 g for a moderate low carb plan.
  2. Fiber: at least 3 g per serving, from wheat, oat or flax fiber or seeds.
  3. Protein: 4 g or more makes a more filling sandwich.
  4. No added sugar, and ideally no sugar alcohols such as erythritol.
  5. Real serving size: compare grams, not just “per slice.”
  6. Ingredients you recognize: a shorter list is easier to judge.
  7. Taste and use: the best low carb bread is the one you will actually eat. Toast-friendly loaves suit breakfast; wraps suit lunch.

Frequently Asked Questions

What bread has the lowest carbs?

Among real breads, keto breads are lowest: the typical product in USDA’s database has about 2 g of net carbs a slice, and some list 0 g. Lettuce wraps and cloud bread are lower still but are not true bread.

What is the best bread for a low carb diet?

A keto or low carb bread with 5 g of net carbs or less per slice, at least 3 g of fiber, 4 g or more of protein and no added sugar.

Is whole wheat bread low carb?

No. It has about 12.5 g of net carbs a slice. It is a better choice than white bread, but not low carb.

Can you eat bread on a paleo diet?

Traditional paleo diets skip grains, so wheat-based keto breads do not fit. Breads made only from nut flours, seeds and eggs can.

What can I use instead of bread on a low carb diet?

Lettuce leaves, portobello caps, low carb tortillas, cloud bread or a keto bread made with high-fiber flour.
